INFINITY AREA’s Experience Learning Game Development with Unity 3D and ChatGPT

Learning Game Development with ChatGPT

The Inspiration

Being well-versed in games, it was only a matter of time before they attempted to make one themselves. The story started as a small experiment. They had the idea of a game inspired by Battlefield Heroes, and they fed that into an AI. Much to their surprise, it worked, but that wasn’t enough. Yes, they had the game, but they didn’t know how it was made. The team wanted to understand game development rather than let AI create the game for them. That’s when the real work started.

The Process

After the first attempt, the team decided to start over, completely different. With a blank 3D project on hand, they entered the instructions into ChatGPT that changed everything. No more “make a game for us”; instead, it was “guide us step by step on how to build the game as complete beginners.”

That prompt completely transformed the project. From that moment, ChatGPT was no longer a generator but now a mentor. It became less about feeding them direct commands and more about asking the right questions to help them on their journey.

For example, if they want to create a particular character that could perform certain actions like running or jumping, they would ask exactly that: “We want to make a character that can move and jump.” Then ChatGPT would explain where to click in the editor, how to create a scene, and how to organize the game.

What It’s Like Creating a Game with AI

Through this experience, the Infinity Area learned what it truly means to create a game with ChatGPT. AI is often presented as a magic button that creates everything on its own, but this experience proved the opposite. You must do the real work.

During development, only a small percentage of game-making comes from coding; the larger part is problem-solving. Although ChatGPT explained how certain scripts work, you still have to test it, and when it doesn’t work the way you want, you need to find the error and try again.

Fortunately, ChatGPT will be there to help you identify and fix bugs. Follow that instruction by returning to the editor and making the necessary adjustments. Then retest the level to ensure it’s working fine.

This approach makes game development incredibly accessible. The key is to know your role and the role of AI in helping you build your game. Never forget that creative decisions are your responsibility.

For anyone dreaming of moving from playing games to making them, now is the time to start. You don’t have to ask AI to make the game for you; instead, ask it to teach you how you can make the game yourself. The creative decisions, testing, and even mistakes and victories all remain human.
